Yan Qing was from the northern capital of Daming. He was over six feet tall, handsome, and of a very thin but muscular build. His skin was porcelain white and covered in flower tattoos. Yan Qing was adopted at a young age by the well respected Lu Junyi, and grew up to be his top advisor. He was highly skilled in various forms of combat, especially wrestling, and his hunting skills were unparalleled. He was gifted musically and could play various instruments as well as sing and dance.
Yan Qing joined the bandit forces at Liangshan Marsh when his master, Lu Junyi, was rescued from execution by Song Jiang and his men (see plate 68 for story details). After the successful rescue, Lu Junyi accepted the invitation to join their forces and Yan Qing went with him.

They had been at Liangshan’s stronghold for some time and Yan Qing decided to travel to a neighboring Temple to enter a wrestling match—Li Kui traveled with him as his backup. Yan Qing bested the reigning champion and a fight soon erupted. See plate 92 for more details of Yan Qing and Li Kui’s misadventure at the wrestling match.
Lu Junyi had traveled to the match with a large force expecting there may be trouble, and arrived just in time to rescue Yan Qing and Li Kui.
Yan Qing is shown here on the temple roof throwing tiles at the police while trying to make an escape.
