Jiao Ting was a very large man from Zhongshan Prefecture who was a skilled wrestler and fighter. He had mastered a set of fighting techniques developed by his great grandfather and taught only within his family.

Li Kui was journeying to Lingzhou to fight Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo (see plates 83; 84 for story details) when he passed Jiao Ting on the road. Li Kui was annoyed by the way Jiao Ting was staring at him so he challenged him to a fight. Jiao Ting dealt Li Kui a powerful blow and knocked him to the ground. Li Kui tried to get up but Jiao Ting kicked him in the stomach knocking him down again. 

Impressed with Jiao Ting’s strength, Li Kui introduced himself. Jiao Ting introduced himself as well and told Li Kui he was on his way to enlist with the bandits of Mount Kushu, led by Bao Xu (plate 82). Li Kui suggested they travel to Mount Kushu together to enlist Bao Xu and his bandits to help kill Shan Tinggui and Wei Dingguo, and once their campaign was accomplished, they should all travel to Liangshan Marsh to join their legions. Jiao Ting agreed to the plan and together the two journeyed to Mount Kushu to find Bao Xu.
