Chinese Name: Li Ying

Japanese Name: Hakutenchō Riō

Rank: 11th of the 108 Stars of Destiny

Nickname: Heaven Soaring Eagle

Li Ying was the head of the Li Family Village near Dulong Ridge which was not far from Liangshan Marsh. The Li Family Village had formed an alliance with the Hu Family and the Zhu Family villages to fight against the Liangshan bandits when they would come and demand to borrow grain. Li Ying was skilled in fighting with the iron lance as well as throwing knives with which he could kill a man from 100 paces.

The Liangshan bandits got into a conflict with the Zhu Family (see plate 46 for details), and soon a war broke out between them. The Zhu Family and the Hu Family were eventually defeated, but the Li Family had remained neutral. Song Jiang (plate 107) wanted the Li Family to join with them, and he was able to convince Li Ying that the authorities would never believe the Li Family hadn’t aided Liangshan during the battles with the Zhu and the Hu families (see plate 62 for details).

Chinese Name: Mu Hong

Name: Bossharan Bokukō

Rank: 24th of the 108 Stars of Destiny

Nickname: Unrestrained

Mu Hong and his brother Mu Chun (plate 33) were highly skilled in martial arts and came from a very wealthy family which allotted them a great deal of influence in their home town of Jieyang. The citizens of Jieyang were all afraid of the Mu brothers as they were notoriously tyrannical and short tempered.

The Mu brothers met Song Jiang when he tried to give Xue Yong (plate 33) money for a street performance. Not wanting anyone to encourage vagabonds, Mu Chun attacked Song Jiang. Xue Yong intervened and knocked Mu Chun to the ground. Mu Chun fled in search of Mu Hong in order to enact revenge. After discovering the man he had accosted was the famous Song Jiang, Mu Chun apologized and the Mu brothers befriended Song Jiang as well as Xue Yong.

Later in the novel, Song Jiang was arrested and sentenced to death for writing a seditious poem on the wall of a restaurant. Mu Hong and Mu Chun aided the Liangshan bandits in their rescue to save Song Jiang. Afterwards they were admitted into the bandit gang at Liangshan Marsh.
